Frequently Asked Questions: Botox® Cosmetic

Botox Cosmetic is an FDA-approved prescription medication that is injected into the muscle to block nerve impulses that control muscle activity.   Botox Cosmetic improves the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

What causes frown lines?

The frown lines between your eyes occur as a result of repeated muscle contractions.  When you concentrate, squint, or frown, the muscles between your brow contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold.  After years of frequent contraction, those wrinkles can remain even after the muscles are at rest.

Will I still be able to make facial expression?

Although you will notice a visible difference, the treatment will not radically change your facial appearance.  The muscle activity that causes the lines is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles between your brows.

What does a treatment consist of?

A Botox Cosmetic treatment consists of a consultation with the doctor a few injections with a very small needle.  Most people do not experience any discomfort at all.

How quickly will I see a difference and how long will the results last?

Some people see a difference in 2 to 3 days and some people not until a full week.  Botox Cosmetic results will last for 4 to 6 months.

Is there anything that I need to tell my doctor?

The doctor should know about all of your medical conditions, including blood thinning diseases and medications, or any diseases that affect your muscles, like ALS or myasthenia gravis.  It is also important to tell the doctor any medications you are taking, prescription and over-the-counter or herbal products.

What are the possible side effects of a Botox Cosmetic treatment?

Side effects associated with the injection include localized discomfort, inflammation, tenderness, and/or bleeding or bruising.  Other side effects are very rare.

Who will administer my Botox injections?

Your Botox treatment will always be done by Brent Silvers, MD.
